Des Moines School board fills Fourth District seat

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines School Board has selected the new representative for the Fourth District.

Following an interview process, board members narrowed the list of six candidates to two: Skylar Mayberry-Mayes and Kameron Middlebrooks. At Thursday night’s meeting, board members discussed the candidates at length before deciding.

“What makes me support Skylar is the work ahead of us and what he has to offer, and I think specifically his skill set,” board member Maria Alonza-Diaz said.

“These are incredibly qualified people and we would be lucky to have either and I think we’ve all said that,” said board member Pat Dix.

The board’s decision was unanimous, appointing Skylar Mayberry-Mayes to represent the Fourth District. He will be sworn in during the April 16th school board meeting.

Mayberry-Mayes is the Executive Director of the Jacobson Institute at Grand View University.

The fourth district seat on the board was left open after longtime board member Teree Caldwell-Johnson stepped down on March 5th due to health reasons. Caldwell-Johnson passed away on March 31st after a long battle with cancer.
