Calls for independent investigation grow in Gaza aid workers’ deaths

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Israel says it has closed its investigation into the Israeli Defense Forces attack that killed seven World Central Kitchen workers in Gaza, including one American.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says he’s seen the Israeli report.

“We’ll be discussing its conclusions with Israeli officials and with humanitarian organizations in the days to come,” he said.

The Israeli military says it dismissed two officers and reprimanded three others for their roles in the deadly strikes and says the country will work to increase the flow of aid into Gaza.

“Prime Minister Netanyahu indicated to President Biden that Israel would be making further changes to his procedures to make sure that those who are providing assistance to people who so desperately need it in Gaza are protected,” Blinken said.

Israel’s announcement that it had wrapped up its investigation and would open another border crossing came just hours after a tense phone call between President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“I asked them to do what they’re doing,” Biden said.

But at the United Nations on Friday, there was skepticism. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres called for a separate investigation into the Israeli military.

“Fixing those failures requires independent investigations and meaningful and measurable changes on the ground,” Guterres said.

Blinken has also called for an independent and thorough investigation into Monday’s deadly strikes.
