Des Moines man charged with murder after shootout during alleged drug theft

DES MOINES, IOWA — Murder charges have been filed against the man police say shot-and-killed one teenager and injured another during an apparent drug deal turned robbery earlier this week in Des Moines. Police announced the charges against 27-year-old Ariante Ladon Williams. The full list of charges against him includes:

  • First Degree Murder
  • Attempted Murder
  • Robbery – First Degree
  • Felon in Possession of a Firearm

According to Des Moines Police, Williams came armed to a meeting at a Des Moines apartment with 18-year-old Jacob Brown and a 16-year-old male on Tuesday evening. Williams is accused of robbing the two of a bag of marijuana. During an exchange of gunfire with the teens, Brown was killed and both Williams, the 16-year-old and a 19-year-old from Ottumwa were all injured by gunfire.

Paramedics found Brown and the 16-year-old at the scene of the shooting. Williams and the 19-year-old both arrived at Des Moines hospitals by private vehicle hours after the shooting. Williams was arrested after being released from the hospital on Friday.

The names of the other injured teens have not been released by police. Brown’s death was the first criminal homicide of 2024 in Des Moines.

Des Moines Police are still trying to locate one of the vehicles that brought one of the shooting victims to the hospital early Wednesday morning, pictured below. Anyone with information about that vehicle is asked to contact Des Moines Police or leave an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers of Central Iowa.
