Heavy snow brings slick Friday morning commute for part of Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa – A quick-hitting weather system will bring a variety of precipitation to central Iowa, including a brief period of heavy snow for the northern half of the state.

This weather system will continue to bring rain and snow to northern Iowa through the morning. Precipitation could be quite heavy at times, reducing visibility. This will also cause slick roads (and already has) where snow and more wintry precipitation falls. The system exits by the mid-morning hours, causing conditions to clear out and dry out by the afternoon.

We’ll get a break from the rain and snow on Saturday. It will be cooler with highs in the low 40s.

A bigger weather system arrives by late Saturday. This system will also bring a mix of rain and snow, arriving Sunday morning. This could mean more slick conditions in northern Iowa on Sunday morning. Warmer air should move in by late Sunday, changing precipitation over to mainly rain. Rain will likely last through Monday, with some rumbles of thunder also possible.

As the system exits, some light snow is possible on Tuesday.

Overall, these two systems will drop quite a bit of moisture. Up to an inch of precipitation could arrive Sunday through Tuesday alone. This will hopefully mean some needed drought relief! Temperatures remain in the 40s and 50s.
