DMPD: Driver in wrong-way crash on I-235 was intoxicated

DES MOINES, Iowa — A 20-year-old woman has been charged with operating while intoxicated in a crash that left one person hospitalized early Friday morning.

At around 5:30 a.m. emergency crews responded to a report of a three-vehicle crash in the 1500 block of eastbound I-235.

According to police, 20-year-old Madilyn Van Pelt, in a 2020 Lincoln Corsair SUV, entered I-235 by driving westbound on the eastbound exit ramp. Van Pelt continued to drive westbound in the eastbound lanes of the interstate until she crashed head-on into a 2002 Toyota Corolla driven by a 35-year-old Des Moines man near East 15th Street. The third vehicle involved in the crash was struck by debris from the first collision.

Both Van Pelt and the 35-year-old Des Moines resident were transported to local hospitals. Police said the 35-year-old driver remains hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Evidence collected indicated Van Pelt was intoxicated at the time of the crash, police said. She has been charged with serious injury by motor vehicle – OWI, driving wrong way on a one way roadway, and unlawful use of drivers license.
