Deadly north Des Moines crash claims motorcyclist’s life
DES MOINES, Iowa — A deadly crash in Des Moines took the life of a motorcyclist early Sunday morning. The crash happened before 2:30am Sunday morning at the intersection of Prospect and Hickman road. “What we are seeing most is that there is some either careless behavior on the motorcycle rider or distraction from a vehicle operator and those two things are very easy to fix. That could prevent a lot of accidents from happening,” said Des Moines Police Department Sergeant Paul Parizek.
When first responders arrived, they found the motorcyclist, a 57-year-old man dead at the scene.
Investigators say he was traveling westbound on Hickman, then lost control and left the roadway and crashed before coming to rest on the north side of the road.
DMPD says they have now investigated 10 serious or fatal crashes involving a motorcycle in 2022. In all of 2021 they investigated 8. Police say this is a 25% increase from a year ago. Parizek said, “Some people say an increase of two being 25% isn’t a big deal. I think their families think it is a big deal. We think it’s a big deal because we are here to keep you safe on the roads.
Des Moines police are still investigating the crash. This is the 14th traffic-related fatality this year and sixth involving a motorcycle.
