How horrible am I?

by Anonymous

I often turn to online ranters and underpaid writers for moral leadership. It’s worked out okay in the past, so I figured I’ll give it another shot.

So I work in retail environment where my co-workers and I share tips. We know our boss and the owners make plenty of money because they are assholes who flaunt it. My co-workers and I have even started talking about forming union so we can get better pay and benefits and such.

When I first started I saw a co-worker (who is technically my supervisor) who’s been there for about 4 years take money out of the tip jar to help one of their friends buy something. I asked them how that could happen and they said anything in the tip jar is all of ours and she’s allowed to use it however she feels. Since then I’ve caught her dipping into our tips to help her friends a number of times.

Unfortunately, this is the co-worker helping us organize and would theoretically help us get better pay and benefits.

I want a union and better pay and benefits asap, but I also want my share of our tips. I don’t want to rat out my coworker to the owners, but should I tell my other coworkers about what’s been happening?

Should I just suck it up and let this person steal from our tips because they “might” be able to help us with better pay and benefits in the future?

I don’t even know if other co-workers take from the tip jar to help their friends too, or if they’ve witnessed our supervisors do it.

Am I a horrible person for even asking questions? What the fuck should I do?
