Repairing cracked and moldy shower floor grout – no previous experience
Hey guys, I’ve moved into my dad’s old place and the master shower has plenty of visible mold all along the edges and in one spot there are two large cracks. I would like to repair this myself.
Shower dimensions: 26×58″
So far in my research I have learned to never grout where two planes meet or where there will be any kind of movement – something the installer did not do here, all edges in the shower were installed with grout.
As for a replacement, I found GE Silicone II (Almond) to have many great reviews, and that a 100% silicone based caulk is what is necessary for this repair.
As for the actual repair process, this is where I am not so sure. There seem to be an endless number of grout-removal tools out there from a simple hand-held scraper to multi-purpose oscillating tool with a carbide/diamond blade.
I am leaning towards purchasing an oscillating tool (something corded, but also cheap most likely?) and then getting a carbide blade meant for grout removal,
I then would need to grind away the grout, which is the most stressful part for me. Reading online, it sounds like I would need to remove at least 1/8″ of grout before I can seal it. Right now I feel I’d be more comfortable manually scraping away the grout as I’ve never used an oscillating tool previously.
Would anyone with some experience be able to share any input?
A lot of the mold on the surface there should wash off with some vinegar, I just took photos before doing any sort of cleaning. I figured if I was replacing some of the grout where there are clear cracks/holes, I might as well go all around the edges at the base of the shower.
