Class-D stereo audio amplifier saves battery power

Diodes Inc. has launched its PAM8965 Class-D stereo audio power amplifier with an integrated synchronous boost converter. Delivering higher output power, extended battery life, and a compact solution, the PAM8965 targets AI-enabled speaker systems and musical instruments.

Running off a 2.8-V to 8.5-V supply, the PAM8965 can drive 12 W into 4-Ω speakers via each of its two channels with 92% efficiency. By incorporating a synchronous boost converter, with pulse frequency modulation (PFM) operation at light loads, the device offers increased performance and efficiency levels, as well as reduced board space usage and lower overall bill-of-materials (BOM) costs, said the company.

The Class-D stereo audio power amplifier’s spread spectrum modulation (SSM) offers more effective electromagnetic interference (EMI) suppression across a broad range of frequencies, which allows the use of inexpensive ferrite bead filters rather than more costly and bulky LC filters, said the company. In addition, the boost converter’s ultrasonic PFM operation minimizes the impact of audible noise emanating from other components on the PCB, and the Class-D and boost SSM switching is synchronized to avoid beats.

Key features include a non-clipping power limit that ensures the speakers continue to provide high audio fidelity without risk of damage and a thermal foldback function that reduces output power if the amplifier device starts to overheat. Other protection capabilities include undervoltage, overvoltage, and short-circuit protection, and thermal shutdown. A low quiescent current of 10 mA helps to further conserve battery charge.
