Minority-owned breweries across the U.S.
In celebration of International Beer Day (August 6), we’ve rounded up a solid list of minority-owned breweries across the United States. All beer is good beer (well, usually), but the breweries included in this piece are worth putting your money where your values are. See a brewery that’s not in your state, but dying to visit? Pack the car and hit the road for the hoppiest trip of your dreams!
While we encourage checking as many of these breweries out as possible, we also advise to drink responsibly. Be sure to check Yelp pages for up-to-date safety information regarding Covid-19, and make sure to visit their website for current tap lists.
Bow & Arrow Brewing – Albequerque, NM
“An incredible brewery, owned and operated by local native women. The beer is unique and delicious, with a variety of classics, sours and aged choices. I personally enjoy their sour beers and their interior design is on point!” – Yelper Allison D.
Fun fact: Bow & Arrow Brewing is the only Native-woman-owned brewery in the country.
Hippin Hops Brewery – Atlanta, GA
“I ended up running into one of the staff members a day before going, Jermaine. Our encounter sealed the deal for me wanting to go. Tasty beer options, good food, attentive staff and Black-owned! Keep up the great work. Way to be a beacon in East Atlanta Village.” -Yelper Alan M.

Celis Brewery – Austin, TX
“Where do I start!? Celis Brewery is impressive! Their lead brewer is a woman!? Ninety-nine percent of their staff are women. In a male-dominated industry, that’s impressive! They have exceptional customer service!” Yelper Krysmrtn M.
Fun fact: In 1992, the founder (father of current owner), flew from Belgium to Texas with his original yeast strain in his tube socks that he had been using to brew his world-famous Belgian-style wit beer for the past 30 years.
Raices Brewing Company – Denver, CO
“A Colorado brewery with Latin roots was just what this Miami transplant needed in her life! … My husband is Colombian and this provided a little taste of home, which seems to be their mission by looking at the website. We can’t wait to come back soon!” Yelper Cassie P.
Fun fact: Raices aims to become a reference center for those interested in learning about Latin culture.
18th Street Brewery – Indianapolis, IN
“I…kept hearing great things about 18th Street Brewery, which it’s Black-owned. The beers are very delicious… There are a total of three locations in Indiana—Gray, Hammond, and Indianapolis.” – Yelper Ashley D.
Fun fact: 18th Street Brewery is currently the second largest brewery in NW Indiana!
Lemonstreet Brewing – Jacksonville, FL
“I really enjoy and dare say love Lemonstreet. I make it a point to stop in every time we are in town. The beers are delish. I am no expert but I know what I like, and I like their style of brews. Their Mexican lager is delish.” – Yelper Maria B.
Fun fact: They host regular creators markets for the community to check out local vendors and talent.
Border X Brewing – Los Angeles, CA
“This place has 3 beers that stand out to all its competitors and will keep me coming back; horchata stout, pepino sour and mango sour. Definitely a pleasant surprise in the inner city.” – Yelper Mayra M.
Fun fact: They host unique events to spotlight pairing their beers – such as Taco Tuesday pairings, and cupcake/craft beer pairings.
Arbeiter Brewing – Minneapolis, MN
“For a relatively new brewery, the beers were fantastic—an impressive variety and tasty. I didn’t have anything I didn’t enjoy.” – Yelper Adam R.
Fun fact: Arbeiter comes from the German word for ‘worker’. “We are firm believers that you get only what you work for.” – Quote from Arbeiter website
Assembly Brewing – Portland, OR
“Assembly Brewing is a Black-owned-business, and the only Black-owned brewery in Oregon. Regardless, the pizza is premium!.. We bought a crawler of ‘new tropical’ for take-away last time, and that beer was delicious. It pairs very well with the pizza and is very satisfying.” – Yelper Jeanne Z.
Fun fact: Assembly Brewing is Oregon’s first Black-owned and operated brewery.
Hillcrest Brewing Company – San Diego, CA
“The pizza is great with funny names… The beers are great. I’m a big hazy IPA person and I love the harland hazy they have on tap right now. I also love that you can do flights.” – Yelper Nissa R.
Fun fact: They are the first LGBTQ-owned brewery in the world.
Lucky Envelope Brewing – Seattle, WA
“I got the grapefruit IPA and the peanut butter cream stout. Living in Seattle got me a lot more accustomed to IPAs but I found this grapefruit one to be truly enjoyable!!” – Yelper Schyler P.
Fun fact: The name Lucky Envelope comes from the Chinese tradition of the elderly generation giving the younger generation red envelopes filled with paper money. The color red is meant to ward off evil spirits and bring good health, while the money inside is supposed to bring prosperity.
Borderlands Brewing – Tucson, AZ
“Of all the breweries in Tucson, this one has one of the most energizing patios for outdoor socializing. Combine that with a varied assortment of beer styles and you get a satisfying drinking experience. As one who prefers wheat-based beers, Borderlands delivers.” – Yelper Connie G.
Fun fact: Outside of their delicious beer, Yelpers rave about their $6 margaritas.
Métier Brewing Company – Woodinville, WA
“Seattle is full of good beer but I have not seen any breweries who equally care about good beer and community. Métier is a Black-owned business, the beer is delicious, the design and ambiance is awesome, and they give back by supporting bike programs for kids who otherwise couldn’t afford them.” – Yelper Laura D.
Fun fact: When they aren’t making self-proclaimed damn good beer, Métier Brewing Company focuses largely on giving back to the community in as many ways as they can.
