Des Moines Woman Shot and Killed; Suspect Dies From Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

DES MOINES, Iowa — A woman shot in Des Moines Friday night has died, according to police, and the man suspected of killing her was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police responded to 4024 Hubbell Avenue around 9:20 p.m. Friday to investigate a report of a shooting. Officers found 41-year-old Des Moines resident Christina Marie Dirks suffering from a gunshot wound outside an apartment building. Dirks was transported to a local hospital where she died from her injury, police said.

Witnesses at the scene identified a male suspect to police and reported that he entered the apartment building. Police have identified the suspect as 42-year-old Rustin Dean Rice.

Police called the Metro STAR Tactical Unit to the scene. Authorities evacuated the apartment building and crisis negotiators attempted to contact Rice. However, police say those attempts went unanswered.

Just after midnight, tactical officers entered Rice’s apartment and found him dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. Officers also found handgun at the scene where Rice died, police said.

According to police, Rice and Dirks had a prior personal relationship and had lived together in an apartment at 4024 Hubbell Avenue. Police say Dirks moved out of the apartment on May 6, a day before she was shot and killed.

“At this time, all evidence indicates that Rice intentionally and deliberately shot and killed Dirks and
then returned to his apartment where he intentionally and deliberately shot and killed himself,” Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek said in a press release.

Dirks’ death is the city’s third homicide of 2021.
