First time fence builder looking for advice

I’m building a 4′ fence to contain my kids in the back yard. I got 4x4x8s (no 6′ in stock), 2x4x8s, and 1x6x8s for pickets. Everything is pressure treated. First time building or even installing a fence.

My plan is to dig and just foot the posts 18-24″ in dirt as I don’t know how permanent we want it. Should they be 8′ center to center or less, then cut the 2x4s to fit? We have plenty of rocks in the yard so exactly 8′ might prove too difficult.

Is 3″ between the pickets and the ground good?

I want to put solar lights or something to cap the posts, so should I cut the pickets to 3’9″ so the tops are even at 4′ with the posts?

Anything wrong with 3.5″ between each 5.5″ picket?

At what heights should I place each of the two rails? I’ve read 8″ from both the ground and top.

Thank you for any answers and advice in advance.
