Mission Viejo man pleads guilty in 2017 robbery spree in Orange, San Bernardino counties

A Mission Viejo man has pleaded guilty to nine robberies and an attempted robbery of ice cream shops, game stores and gas stations in December 2017 that netted about $3,500.

Matthew Scott Rendon, 39, was scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 22 in the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana after his guilty plea Monday. He admitted nine counts of second-degree robbery and a count of attempted second-degree robbery, all felonies, according to court records.

Stores in Aliso Viejo, Chino, Irvine, Mission Viejo, Laguna Hills and Laguna Niguel were hit, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The handgun-wielding suspect wore an American flag bandana and a thick flannel shirt in the stickups, the Sheriff’s Department reported. When Rendon was arrested he had those items in his vehicle, authorities said.
