72-year-old man stabbed at Coto De Caza gate, suspect in custody

A stabbing Wednesday, Oct. 7 at the entrance of Coto De Caza, an upscale gated community in southern Orange County, left a 72-year-old man hospitalized, while one person was taken into custody.

The incident happened at 11:42 a.m. near Antonio Parkway and Coto De Caza Drive, just past the north gate of the community, Orange County sheriff’s Sgt. Dennis Breckner said. The victim was seriously hurt in an altercation with a suspect, who is described as a man in his 20s.

“He suffered a lot of stab wounds, front and back,” Breckner said.

The injured man was conscious shortly after first responders arrived, and was undergoing surgery as of 3 p.m., Breckner said. He was recovering  in an intensive care unit Wednesday evening and listed in “stable” condition.

The person suspected of stabbing him was taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder. Their names were not made public Wednesday evening.

Authorities do not believe there is any lingering threat to the community.

Investigators were interviewing witnesses Wednesday afternoon and working to determine what motivated the assault, Breckner said. It was not immediately clear if the two men knew each other or if either were residents of Coto De Caza.

Antonio Parkway was shut down near the scene of the stabbing, and will remain closed into Wednesday evening, Breckner said.
