A storm erupted within the liberal media following last night’s presidential debate after Trump, egged by moderator Chris Wallace who asked if Trump is willing to say that militia groups need to “stand down”, said the Proud Boys should “stand back and stand by,” a statement which most commentators found as insufficient and/or not condemning. Wallace’s intention was to pivot focus away from discussions of Antifa, a primary catalyst behind a wave of urban rioting since May which Biden had failed to condemn until recently, and toward white supermacists and Trump’s implied support.

What is ironic is that not only has Trump repeatedly disavowed “white supremacists”, but also did so before Chris Wallace during the March 3, 2016 primary debate, as the following clip shows.

In any case, to set the record straight again, on Wednesday Trump said that the “Proud Boys” group should “stand down” and let law enforcement do its work, adding that he does not know who the Proud Boys are. When asked if he condemned White supremacists, Trump said, “I’ve always denounced any form, any form of any of that, you have to denounce” for the benefit of Chris Wallace, should he ask Trump the same question in 2024, before repeating his call for his Democratic rival Joe Biden to denounce Antifa.

“I don’t know who the Proud Boys are. You’ll have to give me a definition cause I really don’t know who they are” Trump said before departing the White House on Wednesday.

“I can only say they have to stand down, let law enforcement do their work… But again, I don’t know who Proud Boys are, but whoever they are they have to stand down, let law enforcement do their work.” Trump said as he left the White House for Minnesota.

When asked if he misspoke when he told the group to “stand by” during Tuesday night’s debate, Trump said “look, law enforcement will do their work. They’re gonna stand down, they have to stand down.”

Meanwhile, the media remains silent following Biden’s dismissal of Antifa as “an idea” when asked to condemn left-wing violent extremism. “Antifa’s an idea, not an organization,” Biden said during the debate, a comment which not a single media outlet has focused on.

Antifa has been behind violence and riots for years, with the group tracing its roots back to Portland in 2007, but has been behind a surge in violence in cities across the country during the summer in places like Portland, where the federal courthouse was besieged by left-wing radicals for months. Attorney General William Barr previously told CNN: “I’ve talked to every police chief in every city where there has been major violence and they all have identified Antifa as the ramrod for the violence.”

On the Hill, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, held a hearing on Antifa and other extremist groups, calling riots “organized terror attacks.”

“These violent riots are not spontaneous, nor are they mere coincidences. Instead, the evidence suggests they are organized terror attacks designed to instill fear and tear down the fundamental institutions of government,” he told Fox News.

Meanwhile, Andy Ngo, a journalist who has covered Antifa for years and was severely injured in an attack by Antifa rioters last year, pushed back on the claim that the group is merely an “idea.”

“If Biden made the comment last year, I think it would be excusable,” Ngo, who is also the author of an upcoming book on the group, told Fox News. “But by now, we’ve had months and months of rioting where there are clear Antifa-organized elements. We’ve had hearings in Congress related to Antifa. There is evidence in the criminal complaints against some charged showing Antifa ties.”

Ngo continued, “Biden’s statement shows that on this subject, he – and the Democrats – want to keep the liberal status quo, which is to downplay and deny the threat of the organized militant far-left.”

He also noted that the violence in Portland was sustained for months, suggesting it was far more organized that a group of people brought together by a common idea. “What people need to know about Antifa is that it is an ideology and movement that includes organized cells or groups,” he said. “You don’t maintain sustained months of rioting in places like Seattle and Portland without members, participants and money.” That was a theme also echoed by Republicans in the House, who last week urged the FBI to investigate who has been funding riots.

As for Trump being racist, here is at least one opposing view:
