California state tracker: Daily coronavirus cases and hospitalizations down nearly 40% since their recent highs

California counties reported 3,574 new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday, Aug. 29, bringing the cumulative total since tracking began to 698,346, according to unofficial totals.

The seven-day average of daily cases in California has been on a sharp decline since July 15, when it was at a near high of 9,092 cases. The seven-day average Saturday was 5,519, a 39% drop from July 15. There were 77 new deaths reported Saturday, bringing the total number of deaths to 12,850.

The state has seen a 43 percent drop in COVID-related hospitalizations since its high of 8,820 July 21. According to state health agencies, there were 204 fewer COVID-related hospitalizations reported Saturday, bringing the daily total to 5,063

 

As of Aug. 28, the state’s breakdown of cases by age is as follows:

    • 5 and younger: 2.1% (14,890)
    • 5-17: 7.9% (55,074)
    • 18-34: 35.2% (243,927)
  • 35-49: 24.9% (172,688)
  • 50-59: 13.9% (96,734)
  • 60-64: 5% (34,960)
  • 65-69: 3.5% (23,996)
  • 70-74: 2.4% (16,596)
  • 75-79: 1.7% (11,496)
  • 80 and older: 3.3% (22,577)

The state’s breakdown of deaths by age group is as follows:

  • 5 and younger: 0% (0)
  • 5-17: 0% (3)
  • 18-34: 1.5% (186)
  • 35-49: 5.7% (721)
  • 50-59: 10.3% (1,293)
  • 60-64: 8.1% (1,024)
  • 65-69: 10.1% (1,266)
  • 70-74: 11.4% (1,143)
  • 75-79: 11.4% (1,429)
  • 80 and older: 41.5% (5,213)
