Woman reached speeds of 100 mph before fatal Dana Point crash, police say

A woman accused in the death of a young Rancho Santa Margarita man after she was pursued by police last week reached speeds of 100 mph, officials said Thursday, Aug. 27.

Ariana Joyce, 44, of Los Angeles was in a Toyota Corolla parked against a red curb with its hazard lights flashing near Park Avenue and Glenneyere Street at 10:27 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, Laguna Beach police Sgt. Jim Cota said in a statement.

Officers performed a traffic stop, and noted that she was speaking “extremely fast,” which led them to believe she was under the influence of drugs, he said.

The woman refused to give officers her driver’s license, then rolled up her window and took off, Cota said. Traffic was light as police chased her through Laguna Beach, and she got up to 100 mph, he said.

A police watch commander called off the pursuit after learning how fast she was going. Joyce crashed just a few minutes later near the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Selva Road in Dana Point, Cota said.

Her Corolla slammed into a Subaru Impreza occupied by three people. Jason Carbonell, 23, had to be cut out of the wrecked car, and later died. His twin brother and girlfriend, as well as Joyce, were also hospitalized.

Joyce was arrested following her release from medical care, then charged on suspicion of murder and DUI Monday, Aug. 24.

She remained behind bars Thursday, with bail set at $2 million.

Joyce was the subject of a restraining order requested by Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin in March 2019, according to court documents. She was ordered to stay 100 feet away from the celebrity and his property for at least five years after making numerous unauthorized visits to his home in Malibu. A judge called her actions a “grave risk” to the singer, and remarked on the “escalation of her delusional belief that she is in a romantic relationship with Mr. Martin” during a hearing in 2019.

Investigators were working to learn how and why Joyce was in Laguna Beach on the night of the pursuit.
