Coronavirus state tracker: California had 5,704 new cases and 125 new deaths; hospitalizations are down

California reported 5,704 new cases of the coronavirus, on Thursday, Aug. 20, bringing the cumulative total since tracking began to 651,471.

There were also 125 new deaths reported, making for a total of 11,784 people who have died, according to unofficial counts from county websites.

Hospitalizations are down, with 267 fewer patients bringing the total to 6,212.

As of Aug. 19, the state’s breakdown of cases by age is as follows:

  • 5 and younger: 2.1% (13,578)
  • 5-17: 7.8% (50,331)
  • 18-34: 35.2% (227,044)
  • 35-49: 25% (160,990)
  • 50-59: 14% (89,952)
  • 60-64: 5.1% (32,602)
  • 65-69: 3.5% (22,309)
  • 70-74: 2.4% (15,461)
  • 75-79: 1.7% (10,672)
  • 80 and older: 3.2% (20,938)

The state’s breakdown of deaths by age group is as follows:

  • 5 and younger: 0% (0)
  • 5-17: 0% (1)
  • 18-34: 1.5% (167)
  • 35-49: 5.8% (666)
  • 50-59: 10.2% (1,171)
  • 60-64: 8.2% (941)
  • 65-69: 9.9% (1,138)
  • 70-74: 11.4% (1,312)
  • 75-79: 11.4% (1,306)
  • 80 and older: 41.5% (4,761)
