Coronavirus state tracker: California had 8,142 new cases and 169 new deaths, hospitalizations remain down

California had 8,142 new cases of the coronavirus and 169 additional related deaths reported as of Thursday. The state’s total number of cases is at least 538,517 and 9,990 people have died, according to unofficial counts from county websites.

There were 276 fewer hospitalizations (7,485) as of Thursday. Hospitalizations in California are down roughly 25% from their high of 8,820 on July 21.

The state’s breakdown of cases by age is as follows:

  • 5 and younger: 2% (10,523)
  • 5-17: 7.3% (38,635)
  • 18-34: 35.4% (185,560)
  • 35-49: 25% (132,714)
  • 50-59: 14.1% (74,464)
  • 60-64: 5.1% (26,940)
  • 65-69: 3.5% (18,582)
  • 70-74: 2.4% (12,936)
  • 75-79: 1.7% (9,014)
  • 80 and older: 3.4% (17,926)

The state’s breakdown of deaths by age group is as follows:

  • 5 and younger: 0% (0)
  • 5-17: 0% (1)
  • 18-34: 1.5% (144)
  • 35-49: 5.7% (555)
  • 50-59: 9.9% (961)
  • 60-64: 8% (770)
  • 65-69: 9.8% (944)
  • 70-74: 11.3% (1,087)
  • 75-79: 11.3% (1,091)
  • 80 and older: 42.5% (4,106)
