Overview

The Getty Foundation is looking for an internationally recognized professional, who is a demonstrated leader in academic art history, museum practice, or conservation, to take on the position of Associate Director. The successful candidate will have experience working in a multifaceted organization, preferably in grantmaking, higher education, museums, or other relevant settings. The Associate Director will help define and implement the Foundation’s strategic objectives and will lead a team of professionals in developing grant initiatives and awarding grants internationally. They will also be responsible for evaluation of grant initiatives to ensure maximum impact. The Associate Director will work closely with staff across all Getty programs.

The Associate Director will report to the Director of the Getty Foundation. They will be skilled at developing effective working relationships within a complex environment and with external partners across the globe. They will have a collaborative style and be able to lead through influence. The Associate Director will provide broad expertise from a strategic perspective, maintain comprehensive knowledge of the disciplines of art history, museum practice, and conservation, and help establish and implement operational objectives. They will regularly interact with senior management and executive levels on matters concerning diverse issues with organization-wide impact.

Responsibilities

  • Applies comprehensive expert knowledge of area of expertise to direct grantmaking operations
  • Provides broad direction and delegates assignments and objectives to subordinates
  • Leads, develops, evaluates, and mentors a team of professional and support staff
  • Determines objectives and assignments for the division
  • Establishes operating policies and procedures for the division
  • Key influencer in the development of overall objectives and long-range goals for the organization
  • Acknowledged thought leader in area of expertise
  • May steward contracts and budget for the department

Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent terminal degree in the fields of art history, architectural history, archaeology, conservation, or the humanities is preferred
  • 10-plus years of supervisory and/or project/process management experience
