The Top 10 Health & Wellness Trends To Look For in 2020
Before we say farewell to 2019, we’re celebrating the biggest trends in wellness. Whether they’re looking for an energy boost at the gym or seeking stress-relief with acupuncture, Yelpers are as passionate about finding the best facialists as they are about the latest trending restaurants.
With the help of our Yelp community, who contributed more than 28 million new reviews over the course of the past year, we are thrilled to release Yelp’s first-ever trend forecast report. So, what workout classes will everyone be trying next year? These trends are what we predict the world’s most passionate, wellness-obsessed people will be booking in the year ahead.
In order to forecast a whole new year’s worth of wellness trends, Yelp’s data science team started by using our review data to find a list of words and phrases that were rising the fastest and most significantly between 2018 and 2019, in terms of percentage of users who were mentioning them. From the list of candidate trends, we narrowed it down to those whose mention rate over the last three years was most indicative of further growth, in order to help predict what classes and treatments Yelpers will be booking in 2020. Finally, we consulted with Yelp Trend Expert Tara Lewis to determine which trends we expect to grow in next year.
IV Drip Therapy – Whether you’re looking to cure a hangover or beat jet lag, IV drip therapy has skyrocketed on Yelp as the treatment has begun popping up on spa menus across the United States. Searches for the rumored hangover cure are up 44% in the last year. (Photo via Business Owner on Yelp)
Medspas: Fillers aren’t going anywhere. We’re seeing Yelpers try out Botox alternatives like Dysport, Jeuveau and Newtox – but where they’re receiving their cosmetic procedures is changing.Expect to see more businesses like NYC’s Ject, a Medspa where getting in an out is as quick and easy as going for a wax.
Dance Workouts: Dance-inspired workouts continue to grow in popularity on Yelp as studios and classes increase their offerings across musical genres. Yelpers in cities like New York, Chicago and Washington, D.C. are searching for their next dance-based workouts.
High-Intensity Interval Workouts: Studios like F45 are growing popular as Yelpers look for functional and effective ways to workout. With the launch of concepts like Rumble Tread, we expect high-intensity interval workouts to continue to be a top workout choice in 2020. (Photo via Business Owner on Yelp)
Hydrafacials: Hydrafacials continue to be one of the most sought-after in-house facial treatments. Their popularity has skyrocketed over the last five years as Yelpers look for their next appointment and review their experience.
Indoor Cycling: Thank Peloton! We’re seeing a renewed interest in spin and indoor cycling classes across the country. Cycle enthusiasts are searching for the closest spin studio in cities everywhere from Anchorage to New Orleans to Grand Junction, CO. (Photos via Business Owner on Yelp)
Holistic Healing: From reiki to salt room therapy, we’re seeing a rise in searches for alternative healing treatments. First spotted in New York in 2018, salt room therapy is making its way across the country with mentions spiking in cities like Miami, St. Paul and Orlando.
Big Box Gyms: Blame your crowded Equinox or 24 Hour Fitness on the renewed interest in weight training in recent years. Yelpers are looking for a reliable place to get their sweat on, and we’re seeing a rise in searches for big box gym chains like Crunch.
Swimming workouts: With the summer Olympics just a few short months away, we’re seeing an interest in swimming begin to rise on Yelp, and expect swim-based workouts like Aquacycle as well as swim class offerings continue to make waves. Swimming workouts are currently the most popular in Chicago and San Francisco.
CBD: CBD-infused treatments and products will continue to pop up in 2020. Yelpers everywhere from New Orleans to Albuquerque to Portland, ME are showing interest in the trend. In fact, CBD mentions were up 118% in the last year!
