2020 Hyundai Sonata upgraded with a more striking design, new body architecture
I’ve read the news and I’m sure you have, too: Trucks and SUVs have taken over the highways of America. Sedans? Meh, consumers are not so interested. But a number of automakers remain bullish on sedans.
Hyundai is one of them and sells a full lineup of sedans, along with its sibling carmaker Kia. The all-new, eighth-generation 2020 Hyundai Sonata competes in the small-but-significant midsize segment and has been upgraded with a more striking design, new body architecture, updated powertrain elements, and an impressive array of technology and safety features.
Hyundai put a lot of effort into its remake of the 2020 Sonata expecting a shift in buying trends, reporting that nearly 60% of sedan owners claim they will stay in this segment. Designed to attract a spectrum of younger, tech-savvy buyers who appreciate its low cost of ownership and improved fuel economy, the front-drive four-door is available in four trims — SE, SEL, SEL Plus, and Limited — priced between $23,000 and $33,000. A hybrid version will join the lineup in the spring.
Test drive
I experienced the newest Sonata in the top-of-the-line Limited trim on a recent ride-and-drive event near the factory where it’s built, in Alabama. Notable is its high level of standard equipment, whisper-quiet ride, turbo-boosted power, well-mannered motoring, and a couple of innovative new features. Also appealing is Hyundai’s industry-leading warranty.
The newest Sonata has been restyled using Hyundai’s new four-door coupe silhouette design; it sports a longer wheelbase, shorter overhangs, and a rear spoiler, with fastback looks.
