Gas leaked fixed….but now I’m worried

I just bought a house and smelled the slightest leak from the furnace piping. I checked with some soapy bubbles and sure enough, there was a leak. I tightened it and have been checking for 2 weeks. No leak, no smell. But after reading online, everyone says to never do these things solo and get a plumber out. I installed a gas water heater years ago, so tightening this wasn’t an after thought. I was going to check some other fittings and redo them with pipe dope to prevent other leaks.

Now, after reading online comments, everyone says this is a terrible idea and to only use a certified plumber. I guess I’m old school and did’t think twice of this diy home repair. What is everyone’s opinions on fixing small leaks like this?
