Good afternoon, Portland! Here’s the latest on local news, national news, and a little bit of fun.

In local news:

• By now, you’ve likely seen the neon green buttons affixed to activists’ lapels and yard signs popping up in Portland neighborhoods declaring “Total Recall”—the name of the local campaign to recall Mayor Ted Wheeler. We caught up with Total Recall campaign manager Audrey Caines to talk about what the campaign’s strategy is, and what comes next now that the campaign has officially filed its recall petition.

• As Oregon continues to have a worrying drought, Gov. Kate Brown has ordered all state agencies to stop watering lawns, washing windows, and running fountains—basically, any use of water that is for aesthetic purposes rather than practical ones. Gov. Brown, can you please also order my neighbor to stop running his sprinkler into the street every goddamn afternoon?

• The two Portlanders who died in a fire at a Northeast Portland apartment complex on Sunday have been identified as Robert William Gremillion and Seth Robert Thompson. Both died at just 31 years old. The cause of the fire is still unknown, though there’s some reason to believe that fireworks may have been involved.

• You may have heard that Portland has been named the best pizza city in the country by some cookbook authors, and people are Having Feelings Online about it. But the best take comes from Eater: Who cares?

In national news:

• This lead from an AP story really paints a picture of how where you live—and how vaccinated your community is—shapes your COVID-19 reality right now: “New York held a ticker-tape parade Wednesday for the health care workers and others who helped the city pull through the darkest days of COVID-19, while authorities in Missouri struggled to beat back a surge blamed on the fast-spreading delta variant and deep resistance to getting vaccinated.”

• A man was killed in Minneapolis yesterday after police, in pursuit of another driver, crashed into his own vehicle. This random occurence is senseless and tragic enough in its own right—but it becomes even more infuriating when you learn that this man was Leneal Lamont Frazier, uncle of Darnella Frazier, who filmed George Floyd’s police killing last year.

• Donald Trump is suing Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube on the grounds that the tech giants “censored” him after they suspended his accounts following the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Trump’s lawsuit is calling for “an immediate halt to social media companies’ illegal, shameful censorship of the American people.” Anyway!

• You know what? Good for her.

And just for fun:

• Are you a filmmaker? (Hint: If you have a smartphone with video capabilities and a sense of curiosity about the world around you, you’re a filmmaker!) If yes, then consider entering a short film into one of our four film fests—you can take your pick from horror, documentaries, porn, and stoner flicks!

• And finally: The only kind of military content you’ll see from me.
