Common board pvc board question. DIY table top workspace

I want to build a cheap table top/desk to use as a crafting station. It needs to be inexpensive but sturdy, and I need it to fit a small space. I can’t find anything online in my price range that fits my size requirements. So I’ve been thinking of making my own. I have two short cube-style shelves that I thought about using as “legs” of a work station. I don’t want to lay plywood on top because it won’t be smooth enough for what I need. It will also have splinters and be very unattractive. So I’ve been browsing on the Home Depot and Lowe’s website and found something called common board PVC board. I found some boards that are 3/4 of an inch thick and 7 3/4 inches wide that I can cut to 3 1/2 feet long. If I lay these boards side-by-side will they work as a table top?

Please keep in mind that I am not an engineer, I have very limited tools, and I’ve never built anything like this before. I typically only build IKEA furniture. But I would like a workstation in my small space that will work for sewing, crafts, and some storage. I would love any ideas you may have. do you think this material will work as a table top? If not, do you have any other suggestions? I’m anxious about going into a home improvement store and asking these questions because I always feel like I don’t belong there.
